Monument to the salt

Monument to the salt. History of the Salinas

The Monument to the Salty is a recognition to all those who left their lives in the saline

For centuries, the island’s main economic activity was based on the salt trade. The Salt Plants, now converted into a natural reserve, were exploited since the Punic-Phoenician era. The Sea flooded a stretch of land in which, by evaporation, the salt accumulated. Then It was collected and shouldered by the legendary figure of the salt. But if transporting the salt was already hard work, the saline should face a much more fearsome enemy and wreak havoc on the island’s population. The presence of stagnant waters is a veritable breeding ground for mosquitoes, and with them, diseases such as malaria were felt on these workers. For a place of recollection, the Church of Sant Francesc was created, and, as a tribute to so much suffering, from 2007, a work by Pedro Hormigo. A monument to the salt-lining represented in his daily work, looking towards the salt-lining, and contemplating what would otherwise have been a punishment, the spectacular sunsets that the salt-mill offers us.
